San Diego has three land border crossings into Baja California, and choosing the right one can save you a lot of time. Here is how San Ysidro, Otay Mesa, and Tecate compare – and which to use for your trip.
San Ysidro: the main crossing
San Ysidro is the busiest land border crossing in the Western Hemisphere. It feeds directly into downtown Tijuana and the main highway south toward Rosarito and Ensenada. It is open 24 hours a day, has the most lanes, and offers Ready Lanes and SENTRI. For most San Diego day-trippers heading to Tijuana or down the coast, this is the one to use. Our drive-through insurance office is right here, at the last exit before the border.
Otay Mesa: the eastern option
Otay Mesa is a few miles east and connects to eastern Tijuana, the Tijuana airport (and the CBX pedestrian bridge), and the road toward Tecate. It handles a lot of commercial truck traffic on its own lanes, and passenger waits are sometimes shorter than San Ysidro – especially at peak times. Consider it if you are headed to east TJ or want to gamble on a faster northbound return.
Tecate: the quiet crossing
About 40 miles east of San Diego, Tecate is a small, rural crossing with limited hours and far less traffic. It is the relaxed choice for travelers heading to Valle de Guadalupe wine country or eastern Baja, and northbound waits are usually short. The trade-off is the longer drive to reach it and its restricted hours – check before you rely on it.
How to choose
- Downtown Tijuana or the coast (Rosarito, Ensenada): San Ysidro.
- East Tijuana, the airport, or shorter peak waits: Otay Mesa.
- Wine country or a calm crossing: Tecate.
Whichever you choose, the requirements to drive in Mexico are the same. Check live border wait times before you go, and make sure you have Mexican auto insurance – it is required at every crossing.
