You do not have to race to be part of the SCORE experience. Thousands of fans drive into Baja each year to watch the trophy trucks fly – and the only thing you need to sort out first is insurance for your own vehicle.

Quick answer: To drive your own vehicle into Baja to watch a race, get a Mexican auto insurance policy online in a couple of minutes. Your U.S. or Canadian policy is not valid in Mexico.

The four SCORE races

The SCORE World Desert Championship runs four rounds a year, all in Baja: the Baja 1000, Baja 500, Baja 400 and San Felipe 250. Each has a contingency and tech day in town beforehand – a free, family-friendly way to see the vehicles up close – then race day out on the course.

Insurance and permits for fans

Get your Mexican auto policy before you cross. If you are heading past the border zone or staying more than seven days, also check whether you need an FMM tourist permit. Our driving-to-Mexico guide has the routes, border tips and interactive maps for Ensenada, San Felipe and the rest of Baja.

Watch safely

Stay well back from the course – these vehicles move fast and kick up rocks. Travel in daylight, fuel up when you can, and follow local guidance. Teams that cross the border for every round of the SCORE World Desert Championship usually do best on an annual policy — it covers your support vehicles all season and is often better value than buying day by day. A SCORE partnership since 1975

Instant Mexico Auto Insurance has worked with SCORE International for more than 50 years. It began at the 1975 SCORE Baja 500, when our president, Harry Andreoli, and then-SCORE president Sal Fish agreed that Instant would provide the liability insurance for every participant entered in the event. We have insured SCORE races for over 40 years — covering race teams and the official SCORE vehicles — and our representatives have attended the races for over 45 years.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Mexican insurance just to watch a race?

Yes. Any vehicle you drive into Mexico needs a Mexican auto policy. You can buy one online in minutes – your home policy will not cover you.

Where can I watch a SCORE race for free?

The contingency and tech day in the host town (such as Ensenada or San Felipe) is free and open to fans, and many spots along the course are public.

Which SCORE race is easiest to get to from the U.S.?

The San Felipe 250 and the Ensenada races are popular with U.S. fans – all are a few hours south of the border.
